For centuries there have been again and again painters from all styles that chose demons as their preferred subject and captured these fantasies on canvas.
Fear, that was so much enforced by the christian influence, might have played a great part for a good many, but there are also voices that view this kind of art as a resistance against these very powers.
And there was surely many an artist that also soothed his inner demons with his paintings, to face and master the dark depths his soul that way.
Thus paintings give us many examples for the dark side of art and with this also material enough for nightmares and gloomy fantasies. .
